These shoes belonged to my mother-in-law who left North Vietnam in 1954 and later Vietnam for France in 1977. They are now utterly old-fashioned but in the 1940’s they were worn on great occasions such as the Len Dong ceremony, a very important ceremony at the time. It was for her the occasion to go into a trance and get in touch with her ancestors. A pious lady, my mother-in-law gave away the whole or her personal belongings when she left the country in 1977. She kept only a few things like these shoes which we have preserved in her memory.
