The geringsing, double ikat, is still carried out by the women of the village of Tenganan on the island of Bali. This village has to keep its traditions of crafts, basket making’s techniques, dyeing and weaving of simple and the double ikat.
The realization of a simple or double ikat is a hugging job. The patterns are thought on the wires of chain and screen before weaving. The patterns are then booked in means of wire or vegetable fibre before the phase of dyeing.
This technique of dyeing is said “to the reserve”. After the dyeing of the wires, the stage of weaving, the wires of chain are generally tended on a trade to belt. All the difficulty of the work lies then in the positioning of the wire of screen so that the pattern is well positioned and thus readable.
